Bill Doggett was 40 years old when he came to the attention of Rhythm and Blues fans with the release of the recording "Honky Tonk" (Part 2), one of the rare instrumental smash hits of the 1950s. He had already been in the music business for many years, both as a pianist, organist, and arranger, performing in big bands and as a sideman to other popular performers and jazz groups, including the Lucky Millinder band, the Ink Spots, Helen Humes and Illinois Jacquet.
